About
The history of the Rusty Nail is closely linked to Drambuie, a liqueur whose origins date back to the 18th century. Legend has it that the recipe was given by Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) to loyal Scottish followers in gratitude for their help after the defeat at Culloden in 1746.
The cocktail is said to have appeared under various names before finally being named the Rusty Nail in the 1960s, thanks to the support of New York’s 21 Club, a chic establishment frequented by the elite. Its name, meaning “rusty nail,” remains a mystery: some believe it refers to the amber color of the mixture, while others mention the use of a rusty nail to stir the drink during early experiments.
