About

The history of Spritz dates back to the 19th century, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire occupied northern Italy, particularly Veneto and Lombardy. Austrian soldiers and officials, unaccustomed to Italian wines that were stronger than those of their country, asked innkeepers to sweeten these wines by diluting them with a little sparkling water.

The word "Spritz" actually comes from the German verb "spritzen", which means "to sprinkle" or "to water", in reference to the custom of adding sparkling water to wine.
